Default Best skiing magazine

Hi,

I'm looking to get back into skiing after having been away from it for a
long time, and I'd like to read up on what's going on with the
equipment, etc. What do you think the best skiing magazine is: Skiing,
Ski, Powder, or?? Or, even if you don't have a favorite, saying what
you think are the differences between the magazines would be helpful to
me. Thanks!

None of those. All of them had their times, but they have allturned into
snowboaund versions of Car and Driver. According to the mags, there is no
bad equipment, ski schools, resorts, etc.

I think all three have online editions. You could look and see what you
think of eaches journalistic approach, as it were. And perhaps look
beyond the print mags, at some of the many ski oriented web sites. Web
based ski forums can give you insight into what current skiers are using
and talking about. The web sites are less constrained by the need for
advertising dollars, and the web forums even less constrained.

But more expensive ones are better, right?

I used to like Snow Country at times, but it is gone now. I agree about
Ski and Skiing. Gawd those magazines are terrible.

Hell, they're all cost-covered by advertising so you can get them
delivered for the cost of postage - get them all. Each usually publishes
a couple of pictures that make the effort of opening the cover worth
while - just ignore the ads, printed hype, articles on over-developed
resorts, etc.

In particular, ignore all the nonsense about short, soft, fat, shaped,
skis and get some decent boards.

Seriously now (this advice is worth a bottle of good beer - I'll collect
later) "Couloir" http://www.couloirmag.com/ and "Ski Racing"
http://www.skiracing.com/ are the only decent Mercan mags; between
them they cover what's interesting in skiing.

Are there any forums or websites that you would recommend in particular?

Hmm, sort of defeats my purpose. If I want pictures, I'll buy some nice
posters.

Yeah, I guess that's really where my questions lie. Skis have changed a
lot and I don't know anything about short, soft, fat, or shaped skis.
I'm 5' 8" and I used to ski on 200 cm skis -- just regular skis, you
know, with edges and a groove down the botoom -- does that exist anymore?

Thanks for the pointers.

Well, "just regular skis" now are a lot shorter, somewhat wider, with
a much more pronounced sidecut. With that said, I think the gear
review issues from Ski/ing mags are worth reading, you just have to
recalibrate the scale they use (ranging from "good" to "unbelievably
fantastic") to a more realistic range (from "bad" to "good").

Given the changes in "just regular skis" over the past several years
(which have prompted changes in skiing form and technique), you'd
probably be better off renting some of the newer models (and taking a
lesson or two) before you buy, anyway. Or you could shop around for
some "outdated" skis (like you're used to) - if you can track any of
them down, you can probably get them for less than an on-mountain
lunch would cost.
