Default Snowing again?

Pete (and anyone else near the Haute Tarentaise) - is it snowing as
much as some of the weather sites indicate? I foolishly came back to
the UK for a party and now have the exciting prospect of driving back
up the road to Tignes on Thursday. Glad I remembered to pack the
chains.

Sun came out, so with temperatures forecast to rise pretty rapidly from

morning...

Had a bit of trouble keeping up with the 10 year olds from the Les Arcs

How nice was that? More importantly, how long was the climb?

And next year, can I come?

Not enough cliff hucking for the uk.rec.motorbike folk

More importantly, how long was the climb?

It was two easyish legs one of 800m the next of 300m - only we had "poor
skin management" - in other words we just chucked the climbing skins
into our rucksacks rather than warming them in an inside pocket. As a
result when we plunged into the freezer on the north - west slope the
glue hardened and refused to stick and there was about 40cm of fresh
snow for the 300m climb. Thank the good lord for powertape!

And next year, can I come?

Only if you fix my bike!

You seem to have recovered very quickly if you are skiing again this
year. I thought the doctors said that was not going to be possible.

Heh.

x-posted for ukrm's viewing pleasure

At least this guy could ski. Do we assume that it was you behind the
camera and a guide in front? Or are we looking at two different
skiers?

I'm not so au-fait with this to convert to time, which is how I
usually see climbs measured. Clearly depends on the fitness of the
individual, but how long did that take you guys?

Makes note to stick onto skins' bags

That'll laarn yers.

Deal.

You seem to have recovered very quickly if you are skiing again this
year. I thought the doctors said that was not going to be possible.

No, they didn't say that, but yes, the recovery is going well. Skied
fresh powder in Grindelwald on Monday, which was nice, but I'm clearly
still nowhere near 100% fit, as I was exhausted after about 4km
vertical (DHO).

Still got the metal rods down my back, which have to stay there until
June[1] and are now causing some noticeable loss of flexibility (as
I've regained muscle stability and usability) and localised pain.
Hopefully I should be back to full strength by the start of next
season.

[1] Apparently to ensure that all the ligament damage I didn't know
about has healed. Seems that the ligaments attaching the spine to the
ribcage were all stretched and torn, and as we all know from knee
injuries, these things do take a long time.

Guide... I like the thought that I could ski around the Alps with my own
personal guide a bit like one of those Victorians on their grand tour of
the Alps. Luc is a very experienced ski mountaineer though.

Or are we looking at two different
skiers?

We are, Luc and Me. Luc is the better skier of the two :-).

More importantly, how long was the climb?

We probably climbed for a little under 3h total... a reasonable pace
considering there was trail to break but we were not exactly speeding.
This is only the 3rd day we've been able to ski in the Chartreuse this
year. Last year we skied from December to the end of March in the area.

And next year, can I come?

Only if you fix my bike!

Deal.

Actually it is a minor problem, if it is a problem at all. The battery
got zapped in the cold a couple of winters back. I changed the battery
and it still goes flat (even though it is left on trickle) and someone
suggested it was the Voltage Regulator that was discharging the battery
and that this is an expensive part. I don't know anything about this
side of motorbike electrics (my degree is in Electronics so know what
various compenents are) and wonder how you go about diagnosing such things.

The whole thing is close to a miracle. You must have the resilience of
an ox. It will be good to get the rods out. I had my ankle pined 3 years
ago (it was broken, I don't do that for fun) and last summer had the
pins taken out and it was a complete relief. It got to the point where I
could barely walk (skiing was ok though).

We'll make a date for next season. Did you get any snow over your way?
The Vosges/Jura look like they've hardly been able to open so Champ and
TOG are right that the low altitude resorts have suffered badly.

Heh - nice!

Well, by way of a trip report (travelling report?) it went a little
something like this:

- left SW London at 11.30 am, made it to the Chunnel terminal by just
gone 1. We were able to get on the 1.50, which was half an hour
earlier than intended. I do like the tunnel - shame they're so in debt
as I'd not like to revert to the ferry.

The drive through France was fairly uneventful, but quite wet. We'd
booked the Etap in Beaune, just south of Dijon, and I wanted to make
it by 10pm just in case there was a problem with my booking so I could
still chat to the garcon on the desk. Good job we caught the earlier
train since we made it at 9.58. Pleasant enough, clean and near the
main road, but I'm not sure I go much on the plastic bathroom, and the
breakfast was bread and water by a different name (pain and coffee).
Okay for 47 Euros for a double with breakfast, but I'd forgo the
breakfast next time.

So, we then had a 4 hour drive through the drizzle to Bourg. Stopped
at Super U to stock up on food, stopped at Weldon to stock up on
shower attachements (don't ask) and headed up the hill. We'd been
warned by a friend we bumped into in the pasta aisle that the going
got rough above St Foy, and they weren't wrong. 3 Kms past the turn of
to the station, chains were obligatoire and I was certainly glad of
them. Even with the weight of a week's London shopping, 4WD and the
chains on the front the back end was sliding out all over the place
and I basically forgot I had a brake peddle for the last 20 minutes
up.

Still, made it in one piece and unloaded the car no probs. It looks
like there's been an extra metre in resort in the last week. Word on
the street is it's "Powder, on heavy sh1t, on ice" with very busy
pistes what with the end of the French holidays. Everyone's looking
forward to next week and conditions high up are, reportedly, "Awesome"

I'm now sat in the Lavachet Lounge with a cold demi and very glad to
be back.

Cheers!

Matt
