SNCF March Tickets to the Alps

: Isn't this where we came in? I submit that "Alpes" is slightly commonly used in English (there is proof of this at the beginning of this thread). Or are we to be told off for referring to Lyon? Heehee. You may be right, I may be wrong but I don't think that 'Alpes' is even slightly commonly used in English except for Les Deux Alpes. And, looking at the spellings again, Lyon and Marseille seem distinctly odd when written in English. That's because you live in the UK (I assume). I live in Geneva, and the French spelling seems much more natural to me. It's just a question of familiarity. There's also confusion between languages. I don't know if this happens with people who work in German (Simon?) but I continually muddle French and English words when I speak or write, since I work partly in French. I could quite easily write "Alpes" by accident in English. It's all communication, anyway - there's no point in getting worked up about how people choose to express themselves. And this is Usenet - there are far worse abuses of English anywhere you look. L8r :-) Jeremy |

L8r :-) Jeremy I've never found that I muddle German and English words when speaking German or English or muddle French and English words when speaking French or English. I do, however, have a tendency to use German words when trying to speak French. I think it's because I'm considerably more familiar with German than French and, when looking for a French word that I don't know, tend to fall upon a German one because I know it's not English. My wife does the same. ___ Michael MacClancy |

SNCF March Tickets to the Alps
"Mike Jacoubowsky" wrote in message om...
The SNCF site lists a zillion countries you can have tickets sent to... but *not* the US. It appears they may have a contract with RailEurope to handle sales to the US. If there is a way to deal with SNCF directly (from the US), please let me know... I'd love to take advantage of it! Perhaps there's a way to order on-line and pick them up in France? Indeed... you can order your tickets online and have them waiting you in your Paris departure station (Gare de Lyon). Just use the "pick-up tickets in France" option. Indeed... you can order your tickets online and have them waiting you in your Paris departure station (Gare de Lyon). Just use the "pick-up tickets in France" option. You can also print your own ticket, the ticket will have your name and date of birth and you need to show photo id when you board the train. I've printed my ticket but not used it yet so I don't know how it will work but I dont see a problem. |
