New old equipment
Hello folks,
Does anyone know where you can buy equipment that is not this year's model but still new? Usually current models are prohibitively expensive. I have grown out of my equipment and I am poor. Nevertheless it would be nice to have boots on the rare occasion I can scrape together some cash for skis and a mountain pass. Thanks, greg |

Thanks, greg Ebay, but be careful and know what you want. I've done very well there with people who have a track record. VtSkier. |

Bit late for this year, but try ski swaps in the fall. They used to be mostly people getting rid of older stuff so they can buy new stuff, but these days the gear comes mostly from dealers who need to clear out past years to make room for new. Its usually 2-3 years old, they will keep last years stuff in the showroom at a modestly reduced price. Some dealers will dicker on last years stuff, but you gotta know the gear really well. Better than I would to be sure. And there has to be something in it for them, like buying a whole package, or outfitting your kids, so if your really destitute, you probably don't have too many cards to play. Other than that, try Ebay. |

oups.com... Does anyone know where you can buy equipment that is not this year's model but still new? It's all over eBay: a lot of it sold by ski shops or dealers with lots of sales and lots of positive feedback. Check the feedback before you buy. I think I would steer clear of Cupolo's. They were a big seller on eBay, but -- unlike the people you *should* buy from -- had quite a bit of negative feedback. Then they mysteriously vanished as an eBay user. More info: http://cupolosportssucks.tripod.com/ I wouldn't take the Cupolo's saga as a rap against eBay sellers in general, though. |

It would help if we knew where you live, someone may recommend some local shops to you. |

As previously noted, Ebay has a lot of new gear, but I wouldn't buy boots via mailorder -- unless I was buying an identical second pair to one I already owned, for whatever reason. A boot that doesn't fit is a waste of money at any price, and so I'll always buy those retail. Fall is a good time to pick up last year's unbought stuff at ski stores -- I got a good pair of Langes that way, for a pretty good discount, but still not "poor" prices. -- Mary Malmros Some days you're the windshield, other days you're the bug. |

BTW, check out REI, they have some equipment from last year - Rossignol Bode Miller One, Volant Machete, etc - prices are over 50% off (66% off for Rossi, 71% for Volants). www.rei-outlet.com (helps to live a few blocks from their main store) |
