Default North Shore Superior vs. Minocqua area

Scaling back my plans for the moment to go to Norway or Finland for a week
of skiing....I am wondering now about the North Shore of Lake Superior MN or
going a little further east to Minocqua WI and maybe on to Ironwood MI.
This would be for about 8 days in early January. I know that both areas
have good snow.....and good trail systems. I spoke to Scott at Pincushion
Mtn B&B and he said conditions there were great....and there were a lot of
skiing opportunities......for example going down to the Sugarbush system
near Tofte.....or even going up to Thunderbay Ont. for variety.

Any thought about these places.....where would you like to spend a
week.....given these areas?

I highly recommend the North Shore of MN. You won't get bored with nearly
400km of trails from Tofte to Gunflint Lake on the Gunflint trail. The
trails that are groomed the most consistently are Sugarbush, Pincushion and
Golden Eagle on the Gunflint Trail. Bearskin, Cascade and Deeryard, Gunflint
are next in line. There are many other smaller areas too.

If you're willing to head to ABR, stop there... on your way to the
Keewenaw. Stay in Houghton and then you can ski, MTU trails in
Houghton and the great Swedetown trails in Calumet. Houghton is a cool
little town and the grooming at both ski areas is fantastic. There's a
third trail system in Hancock, Maahto Histo (sp?), but I haven't been
there yet, perhaps this time when our family goes up for our annual
week of snow in the UP.

Both places are awesome. You've got ABR and Wolverine right in
Ironwood, MI. Plus, the Montreal and Penokee trails just down the road
in WI. The Northshore with Sugarbush and the Gunflint trail systems is
hard to beat. You mentioned Thunder Bay, Kamview and Lappe are fun
places to ski. You can buy ski equipment pretty cheap in T Bay too
thanks to the exchange rate. It's a pick-em.

Thanks for the feedback.....I hope I am not driving members crazy with my
questions that range on places half way round the world........but hey I get
to go once a year.......leaving family responsibilities at home. I guess
the deciding factor is weather and snow.......I mentioned before that these
trips work out if one is willing to go after New Years .....I often wait
until one week before. Boiling away in the mix is Quebec as well.

I love reading your questions and the responses -- they get ideas
going in my head.

That's good...........I am not a racing skier......so I thought my posts
might get a little tiresome. But come to think of it, a good feature of
this type of discussion would be to give people ideas where to go skiing for
a few days. With me, I can get a little obsessive about snow
conditions....weather etc. I learned the hard way after, without much
research, plunking down several hundred dollars to watch a hard icy rain do
wonders to a trail system in New England. Of course even with the most
careful research Mother Nature can have other plans.
