I'm curious as to how you remembered that sin/cos45 was 1/root2. Not
the sort of thing that sticks in most people's minds, I'd have
thought:-) Or is there a much simpler theorem that I've forgotten?

Simpler - 45degrees means 1 unit vertical for every 1 horizontal - our Greek
mate gives root 2 for the hypotenuse (i.e. the bit actually skied)

Maybe I should also ask if this 'distance skied' includes the very steep
chair-lifts/cable-cars?

Dunno, but FYI cable cars can climb stunning gradients (e.g. the Aig du
Midi top stage must be 45 degrees if not more). Chair lifts can ascend
much less steeply, I don't know the upper limit but I can't recal riding
a chair that averages anything like 45 degrees.

The Aig du Midi top section rises 1,485m over a horizontal distance of
2,428m, so even that is far from 45 degrees (31.5 degress I make it).
Perhaps "stunning" was somewhat of an overstatement. As I said above
chair lifts (and I think gondolas) don't get as steep as this in my
experience.

T-bars are an exception of course, most of them climb at an angle close
to the vertical:-)

Default Steepest blacks (was Distance of the 3 Vallees Route)

I know according to the Good Skiing Guide/Where to Ski a few years ago
that the Couloir sous la Telepherique at Courchevel was the steepest
piste in Europe, at 38 degrees, although I think it's recently been
changed to an off-piste route.

This brings up an interesting topic:
Is there a league table of steepest blacks in the Alps anywhere, with
their gradient? I'd love to know where the black down the Titlis at
Engelberg comes.

I'm going to use my etrex (which I use for mountain bike trail navigation)
to measure my top speed on the piste - I've always wondered......

Good idea - I'll pack mine as well. Off to Val Thoren in 3 weeks.

Rob.

You get a top ten list of blacks in magazines every so often.

I have never seen the Engelberg one on such a list, and it isn't as steep
as those that I have skied that were on those lists.

Go on then, give us a clue as to what they are. I haven't bought a ski
magazine for years, too samey for me.
