BC snowboarding in March
Hi riders,
I'm planning a snowboarding trip in March for three weeks from Europe to BC and I'm looking for "very good" snow/powder conditions would you suggest me this dates? 6th-21st March or 13th-28th March. Is the fourth week of March too late for a good powder in BC? Which are the best places for an insane freeride, backcountry, catboarding and helibording in this period? Thanks very much and have a nice riding. gio |

Whistler BC is consistently ranked either the top or in the top few
ski/snowboarding resorts in the world. Transworld Snowboard just rated it #1. The only downside is that it's relatively expensive. Given your date choices, I would favor the first 3 weeks rather than the last, but all of Mar should be excellent. I was there 2 weeks ago and had a blast. Banana wrote in message . .. Typical hotels are places like Westin, Fairmont, they are building a Four Seasons, etc. It's all upscale, more so than places like Vail. The town is small, so essentially everything is slope side, which is nice, but you pay for it. They hardly discount lift tickets at all, even for multi day passes, and they can do it because you have no other nearby choices. By comparison, I can stay in the Summit County, CO area at places like the Holiday Inn, which is quite nice, for less than half what it costs in Whistler. And from there, I can do several world class resorts, Breckenridge, Copper, Vail, and more. Plus, lift tickets are less, with discounts readily available. I've done Copper for $32 a day. I think Whistler is a great place, but it is one of the most expensive. |

You won't find much powder in Whistler at any time of the year. It's a
Coastal Mountain, not part of the Rockies. Don't quote me on this but I think the peak elevation is actually lower than the base in some of the resorts in The Rockies. If you want fluffy champagne snow, Whistler is not the place, especially in March. "Chet Hayes" wrote in message om... If you want fluffy champagne snow, Whistler is not the place, especially in March. I have to disagree. You are right that Whistler is not known for its champagne powder on the level of Utah or the Rockies. However, I have had some sweet powder days at Whistler that are far from Cascade Cement. Let's not forget that Whistler is WAY North of Utah and Colorado, so the fact that the elevation isn't as high as resorts in the Rockies is somewhat negated. Yes, it is a part of the Coastal Mountains which means it doesn't get the super light stuff, but don't let that fool you. Whistler can have great powder. Also, the quantity is key. While Colorado gets 250-300 inches on a GOOD year, Whistler averages 360 inches. And the terrain... oh man... it kicks ass. I have skied all over the US and Whistler is #1 in my book. There's a reason it always gets ranked #1 my the ski and snowboard magazines in their resort reviews. You are from Canada, but have you ever been to Whistler? I now
regularly ride at Kirkwood in Lake Tahoe, which gets 500 inches a year... however my finest memories of powder are at the Glacier bowls accessed from Spanky's Ladder in Blackcomb. After a easy no-incline 30 minute hike it was 3+ feet of untracked powder the entire way down the slope... and virtually no tress or rocks in the way. That was in March of 2000. The year before we went to Brekcenridge and Copper Mountain in Colorado, which are awesome resorts too (there was tons of snow and powder there as well) I'm just contesting your assertion that you won't find "much powder" at Whistler at "any time" of the year. I don't care much about Transworld's opinion on anyway and while vertical elevation is nice, Whistler is still worth checking out (even those Lake Louise is preferred by Canada/British tourists). I think it is one of the best resorts in North America. --Arvin "HK" wrote in message ... You won't find much powder in Whistler at any time of the year. Don't the Rockies start from New Mexico and run all the way up into Canada? Sure there may be local names for different parts, but I thought the whole range was called the Rocky Mountains. Don't quote me on this but I think the peak elevation is actually lower than the base in some of the resorts in The Rockies. In the same way that there is snow at sea level in Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Northern Scandinavia - and snow on the peak of Kilimanjaro in the middle of Africa. You're not comparing like with like. If you want fluffy champagne snow, Whistler is not the place, especially in March. Champagne powder is OK, but you need a lot of it to cover up the crust from before. Whistler can have some great powder.
