BTW, your posting style is getting really irritating. Do us a favour
and learn to write proper words, could you? And preferably below the
text to which you're replying, snipping irrelevant stuff and
signatures. Makes it a lot easier to read. Ta.

Point taken! I will try harder.

Hi all

Taking family skiing this yr. Looking forward except 4 trip - i decided to
drive! I enjoy driving so it seemed like a good idea at time. Now i am
wondering a) r my young family up 2 it ? b) can i cope with the

inevitable
quarrelling and crying (me!) and c) can my 2 wheel drive car cope? time

will
tell.

To Add my 2p worth to everyones replies:

Things worth considering

a) A seperate walkman for each of the kids this keeps their attention to
themselves and stops them pestering each other.

b) Plenty of small bribes for good behaviour to stop them from fighting .

c) A 'gameboy' or similair, occupies my son for hours.

d) Not too many stops, as time stopping adds up remarkably and short breaks
always last longer than you think.

e) If you are doing most of the driving and your wife is less enthusiastic
but sharing some, make sure that you have some rest before driving in the
dark as this is more tiring.

f) If you are arriving late and do not have a french credit card fill upwith
petrol before leaving the autoroutes. Off the autoroutes many petrol
stations are unmanned in the evening and will not automatically dispense
petrol via the credit card system to UK type credit cards.

g) Make sure your battery is in good nick, a week at 1600m in winter without
moving often results in a flat.

h) You will probably be tired on the first morning, if the children have ski
school on the first morning arrange as much as possible arranged in advance.
Lift passes, skiand boot hire etc and pack so that their first mornings
clothes socks, gloves etc are easily to hand.

We have often driven forrm Scotland to the Southern French alps with the
children now aged 7&9. It aint to bad but I prefer cheap flights where
possible as I am less tired at the end of the day. Hope you find some of
these suggestions helpful.

Bob

Missed that one.

By the way the bit about traffic police checking at the auto tolls cf
seems to be an urban myth.

Interesting point. I have driven so much in France and at such incredibly
stupid speeds that I would tend to agree. That wont be an issue this time
around anyway.

Careful.... they're really cracking down on speeding in France. New
high-tech equipment, alcohol limits lowered (equivalent of 2 units now),
automated cameras, random breathalizers, on the spot fines ... there's a
major government move to crack down on accident levels ....

To make it worse, drivers of foreign registered cars won't get away with it
much longer - there's a Europe-wide plan to impose a system with fines being
chased wherever you're from...

.... and only with a 5 kph tolerance level I've heard, irrespective of the
speed limit. Someone know if that's true?

I was wondering about that. More and more people are getting the automatic
'telepéage' badge, with a monthly statement. Haven't had my first bill yet,
but if the times are also registered it would be a simple task for the flics
to check average speeds direct from the autoroute company concerned (
