Apprentice.

As much as I liked the John Wayne version, this one is a lot better.
Not to be missed is the scene of Mattie's bargaining with the horse
dealer.

Please post more details. It was one of John Wayne's best movies. I
can't imagine a better version. I believe it was the only movie John
Wayne got an Oscar for.

To me, the weak part of the original movie was the performance of Glen
Campbell, who was apparently cast only for his good looks.

I disagree with this. *Glen Campbell's part was only minor.

Minor? LeBoef was the third character after Rooster and Mattie.

I think Wayne's supporting-actor role to Robert Montgomery in They
Were Expendable was just as good, but it didn't even get an Oscar
nomination. *By the time of True Grit, most voters knew it was Wayne's
last chance at an Oscar, and voted from their hearts. *It might also
have helped Wayne that both Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voigt were both
nominated for best actor for their roles in Midnight Cowboy, thus
sharing votes with each other.

I forgot to mention "The Shootist", which I imagine would have won
Wayne an Oscar if he didn't already have one.

I'm with you. *But what about the new True Grit? *Who's in it and how
was the show?

Did Robert Duvall have a cameo? *Was Blackie in it?

None of the leading characters were known before or recognizable in
their roles here - a Coen Brothers' habit.

It would be interesting to intercut the two versions trying to make
the best story out of the two. Wayne's "Fill your hands, You son of a
bitch" is better than the new one, but the new horsetrading scene and
the new ending are better than the old.

I finally got around to reading the local papers and following up on
teh internet. The big news seems to be that the town of Mammoth Lakes
lost a $30 million lawsuit some time ago and just lost the first
appeal last month. As best I can tell, the town council agreed in
1997 to lease the airport property to a private developer who would
improve the airport capacity and build a resort hotel on the site.
When the FAA expressed some concerns over the arrangement, the town
council decided unilaterally to withdraw from the lease agreeement,
but didn't tell the developer group about it for 7 years. The
developers sued for there lost expenses (they were proceeding as if
thte deal was still on) and won $30 million in the local courts and in
the first level of appeal.

The town doesn't have the money or any reasonable way to raise it, so
the new members of the town council, only one of which had anything to
do with any of the dealings, are considering bankruptcy. Meanwhile,
they are assuring everyone that they will continue to operate the
essential town services - police, fire, and snowplowing.

Recently the LA county government, in conjunction with whoever the hell
they have to conjunct with, decided to bulldoze 11 acres of virgin
woodland between the mountains and a relatively posh foothill
neighborhood in order to dump the sediment they need to remove from the
dam upstream. Life threatening, public safety, clean drinking water, etc.

Outrage from the citizens and, for once attempting to do something
useful, the Sierra Club. Suggestions that they dump the sludge in the
giant gravel quarries 10 miles away in Irwindale (check google earth,
damn impressive), sell it to people who need landfill, etc. landed on
deaf ears.

Today they bulldozed the lot. 100-year-old oak trees. They refused to
allow reporters, citizens, photographers, to observe the activities "for
their own safety".

I don't consider myself an actual tree-hugger (sometimes they really
HAVE to go), but it seems outrageous to get rid of old trees when there
are other options available -- especially in view of the highly
destructive fires we have in the San Gabriels.

I have a large monterey pine dying in front of the house, one of three
that weren't all that impressive when we moved here 17 years ago. I'm
going to give it a chance to recover in the winter rains, but if it is
still mostly brown this summer, I'm converting it to firewood.

I'm sure there is some local ordinance or permit I will be ignoring in
the process.
