Default Carbon boot repair question

I managed to pole the instep side of my brand new Carbon classic boots
in one of the wonderful crosswind sections at the Mora (MN) Vasaloppet
on Sunday. Probably just as well - if I'd missed, I likely would've
gone down instead.

Anyway, I've now got a nice little tear in the soft fabric side of the
boot. Does anyone have any great suggestions (other than duct tape) to
repair these?

Thanks,

Marsh Jones

I would recommend something like a tent repair type of glue used sparingly.

I've used this with 100% results on torn GoreTex etc.

It remains flexible in all temps.

Buy it at any outdoor gear store. Sorry don't have the brand handy.

Good luck!

You might want to see if there is a good shoe repair person in your area, who might have some ideas about adhesives and patching techniques, or contact Salomon directly first to see if they have any ideas or reccomendations.

My initial "do it yourself" thought is one of those "invisible" vinyl patching kits you can find at an auto parts store. I'd probably want to do a test somewhere on a hidden part of the boot (under the cuff somewhere?) to see if the glue would bond, first.

On the other hand, maybe they made those boots silver so they would match duct tape...

Marsh, there's an old Swede (I think) master boot repairman with a shop
on Hamline, about three blocks above University in St. Paul, that is
highly recommended. Hartland Shoe Repair, 591 Hamline Ave N,
(651)646-4326.

Second that.

My initial "do it yourself" thought is one of those "invisible" vinyl

patching kits you can find at an auto parts store. I'd probably want to do
a test somewhere on a hidden part of the boot (under the cuff somewhere?) to
see if the glue would bond, first.

Same here - the cover of the carbon boots looks "vinyl" like to me, sort of
like a pvc fabric? Anyway, having repaired a bunch of pvc fabric tears on
canoes as well as other stuff, like hypalon, rubber, ABS, plastic, canvas,
etc. about the only thing I know is that you want to pick the right glue.
My first guess would be vinyl repair glue but testing is in order. You
could probably find clear tape or even maybe glue a neatly trimmed patch of
duct tape since it's the right color, and probably tough enough if you can't
find something better. I've also seen self sticking clear and colored vinyl
tape as well as nylon repair tape that might just stick well and look
decent.

On the other hand, maybe they made those boots silver so they would match

duct tape...

I think you're right. Have you seen how ugly the duct tape repairs on the
bumblebee boots are? (I'm smart enough to use fancy pants black duct tape).

My only other recommendation is to put a piece of tape over the cut now - it
won't get any worse. If you use clear packing tape or gray duct tape, who
knows, your temporary repair could just be your final repair as well. (I've
done that a few times!).

Grissy
