Boots and bindings... What determins which boots and what bindings? Is it
best to stick to the same brand for both or what? I've been looking at
Burton Moto as far as bots are concerned, is a Burton binding my best bet?

In theory having the boots and bindings from the same company would result
in the best boot to binding fit, however there is nothing stopping you
trying out different brands with each other to see what works best for you.
In the past I have had Airwalk boots in K2 bindings and that worked out ok,
Van boots in K2 bindings and that was alright. Vans in Flow bindings and
that wasn't great for me at all. I have since taken off my Flow's I never
got on with them, I am pretty convinced that Flow bindings and Flow boots
would be the way to go if you want Flow bindings. Now I use Solamans with
Solamans (can't remember how to spell that) and they work great together.
The Solaman boots in my K2 Bindings wasn't good at all.

I got my boots first and I think that is the right way to do it, fit is
everything, then I went down to a couple of stores and stuck my booted foot
in to every binding they carried. In the end I got the Solaman bindings
because they fitted well and I liked the features and even the styling. But
some of the other bands seemed to fit just as well.

If it is Burton you are mainly looking at, I have never heard anything but
praise for Burton Custom Bindings from people that ride on them.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the pointers. Besides the obvious differences in construction,
what are the functional differences between a strap in design like the
Custom, and a step in design like the SI or PSI (burton models)?

so much to learn.

My 1st bindings were Customs, from '97-98. The basic design looks similar
now with a few more bells and whistles. I personally found the straps
uncomfortable from day 1, and the same goes for other Burtons up to the
01/02 CFX which was the last time I demoed a Burton binding. They were
definitely forgiving enough for learning on - didn't amplify your mistakes
the way something stiffer does. (I have Salomon Sp6's now and while they
are fabulous for carving, they do amplify your mistakes!)

The general consensus on the Burton message boards (not just people that ride
Burton, lots of "Burton sux" posts too) is that it's not worth buying the
Customs, get Missions instead, they're more comfortable. Having only ridden
the Missions, I can't compare, but I can't complain about mine, either.
Most/all of next year's models are supposed to have capstraps.

Want to sell 'em? If you're local to me (East SF Bay Area), and the price is right...

I haven't actually used Flows (being a noob), but they look pretty cool, and one
of my friends highly recommends them.

Its funny though everyone I have ever met has gone on and on about how they
love their Burton Customs...Maybe they just are justifying their purchase. I
have never personally used them. I can't say enough positive stuff about my
SP5's though, and I like the Saloman boots too.

As for step in's...Its been some time for me but I just never felt connected
to the board with them. Also I had issues with clickers and snow getting in
the way of stepping in. I wouldn't mind trying some plate bindings and
hardboots but for Softboots straps has always made sence to me. Flows I kept
having problems with heel lift, not within the boot but with the boot and
the back of the binding, not so much that I came out of them or anything but
enough to make be uneasy really going hard on a toe edge. Then again like
the Burtons I have never met anyone on a lift that had anything negative to
say about Flows either. The thing is if you watch the pro's every one
appears to be in Strap bindings (well not the racers they have plates).
People go on about step ins being so much more convenient but with modern
ratchets I can get in to my straps plenty fast enough. My old K2's didn't
even have ratchets...they were a pita to put on.

They may have not tried the Missions to compare them to, or that just might
have been the best in their price range.

I'm just paranoid about popping out of them, I've never used them, never intend
to.

There was a thread here a while back about the '04 Flows having a different
design with some flimsy metal parts that held the highback up, rather than
cable pressure like in the older ones, else I probably would have considered
them this year, but until they fix that design, I'll pass. Haven't seen any
used '03 or earlier Flows for sale anywhere.

A lot of this stuff is covered in the FAQ, but the two major differences
I can think of:

1)step-ins only fit with their respective binding. So in other words if
you buy certain step-in boots, you are limited in your binding choice
to bindings compatible with the step-in system on your boots.
Soft boots on the other hand fit any strap bindings (in their size range),
so your choice of bindings is bigger. This should not by any means
deter you from a step-in system. If you find a pair of comfortable step-in
boots, check if you like the binding and go for it.

2)step-in boots are usually heavier due to the hardware attached to them.
This might or might not mean a lot to you, but it is a factor to consider.
