And a fine film starring James Whitmore, James Arness AKA the
un-friendly Matt Dillon, and a score or two of slow, clumsy, nuclear
family ants. No uncles.

Sounds like they took a lot of liberties turning JCO's novel into a
screenplay.

Not half as much as she took novelizing an Irish r&b band in the first
place.

It's called artistic license, it'd be a pretty dull book otherwise.
How many pages could you stand to read about someone shouting

Here too, but they insist on chains. Not without reason, we even
have trouble with rain around here :-(

You use chains in the rain? Jeez, and I thought Texans were stupid.

Them's fightin' words, podner.

We have to use chains whenever it snows during the night, or even the
previous night. Right now chains are required only on the 2 miles of
road around Big Bear Lake, which means even if you can get up to the
dam, you can't get to the ski area without chains -- in theory. I don't
see how they can have NOT cleared the town streets already.

We don't have to use chains in the rain. It's just that it happens so
infrequently that nobody remembers from one time to the next that water
on oily road = slippery.

Is that an African or a European Bunny?

You need to update your antibush cartoon sig link. Unless its some
sort of twisted sick joke on your part to get me to look at a pink 404.

Is this more acceptable? http://www.ucomics.com/tomtoles/2004/02/20/

Sheesh, ya gotta run a link validator on your sig file these days....

I though you put chains on your tires. Are you telling methat they
chain the road in California?

Sorry, I don't mean to be obtuse, but how does putting chains on
make the road oily? I can see how you all might forget.

According to Jim-not-in-Texas, if you get up oily you can avoid the
chains.

Only when they don't want you to use it.

Chains get rusty from being used in wet and possibly salty conditions.
If you oil them before use they last a lot longer. If you use too much
it drips all over the road while you're putting them on. Another
explanation, although much less credible, is that it comes from oil
leaking out of cars and that it builds up during dry periods; as soon
as it rains the surface becomes a skating rink until the crud washes
away. See, I didn't think you'd believe me.

Any more questions?

The snow we get here wouldn't cover the ground. It rains a lot.
When it first rains after a drought (officially defined as three weeks
or more) the roads can get very slippery.
The buildup on roads contains mainly tyre rubber, with added plant
debris, dog ****, oil, soot from exhausts, herbs and spices, colouring
and preservatives.
Due to the method of production it sometimes contains nuts.
The water that runs off roads when it rains is about the most poisonous
thing you can still legally pour into our rivers.

Oh yes, my point - the tyre rubber's important in the slippery effect,
as are some of the other mixers - it isn't just oil.

There is definitely rubber there (occasionally even big chunks of it --
the dual-wheel truckers run their tires until they blow, relying on the
tire's companion to take up the slack until they can stop to change it),
but it's mostly oil. Motorcyclists generally ride in the auto tire
tracks, not in the center of the road which is darker from the dripping
oil. Of course this is SoCal, we probably have a bit more herb debris
than you Brits, and not much dog**** on the freeway at all -- maybe the
occasional dog gut or ear, but they don't last long enough to ****.
