Default Mt. Bachelor Advice?

I'm going to Mt. Bachelor in a few weeks. I'll be driving down from
Portland. Does anyone have advice on runs, places to eat, places to
avoid, etc...

Thanks in advance,

John

First and foremost hope for enough snow so that the Outback / Northwest
areas open. Especially if you like tree riding. If you like beer
you've got to go to the Deschutes Brewery and sample some if theirs.
I'm not crazy about their food, but they are one of my favorite
breweries.

If the Summit isn't open Bachelor is an average mountain. Not much better
than Meadows.

If it's a clear day and the Summit is open Bachelor is fantastic!

The Deschutes Brewery restaurant in downtown Bend,
like Mike T. mentioned, is fun.

I am a local, so of course I am biased, but I feel Mt. Bachelor is far
better than Meadows even if the summit isn't open, and I was a season
pass holder at Meadows for 7 years before I moved here. The snow here
is much lighter, the runs are way longer, and the terrain is better.
NW Express is the longest high speed quad in the Northwest US and the
tree runs there are better than any I have ridden in the US which is
saying a lot. Nearly every lift at Bachelor is a high speed
detatchable quad as well which means short lines. We never get the
crowds that Hood does because we don't have a big city link Portland
nearby.

The only downside to Mt. Bachelor is that there aren't any really
serious sustained steeps. The summit does have some good steeps in
the Cirque bowl and off the cornice but they are short and sweet.
Still, I love it here and I think on the whole Mt. Bachelor is the
best place in the NW.

If any of you guys are in town stop by our shop and say hello. We are
on Galveston right across from 7-11 and next to the Westside bakery.

Current Meadows passholder here - I agree, I like Bachelor better
overall for the same reasons Chris mentioned plus the fact that they
have better trails for alpine riding (more choices of longer, wider,
constant-pitched fall line slopes - Skyliner, Pine Marten have some
great carving runs)

I've never even been on Bachelor's summit, so I don't know how it
compares to say, Upper Heather / Clark (lift access) or Superbowl (cat /
hike access) but I'm willing to bet that those runs at Meadows have the
edge. Then again, they are probably open less often than Bachelor's
summit.

Hey Mike,

Heather is definitely sick, aside from the runout at the bottom. I
have had some killer days there when the powder is deep, and even when
it's icy they will sometimes use a winch cat to groom the lower
entrances off of shooting star which makes for awesome steep groomers.
The other thing, as you mentioned, is that you can hike above the top
of Heather Canyon to get literally thousands of extra feet of
vertical, depending on how far you want to hike. And if you don't
feel like hiking, you can pay a mere $10 and have the cat take you up.
At Bachelor, the top is the actual top of the mountain, so you can't
hike any more. However, it is pretty cool to be able to ski any
direction you want off the summit since it's an old volcano and has
runs/bowls off every side.

I also agree with the above. Bachelor is on the whole, better. Things
just operate much more smoothly, and the northwest express has some
great long runs on it. If it's open, and your comfortable on blacks
with occasional bumps, it's where you'll want to be.

The summit area is cool, but it's only been open twice that I've gone
there. I didn't like the runs I did as much as logging laps on
northwest... but then again I didn't branch out and try anything off
piste around the sides or back.

Bend is pretty close, plenty of places to stay and eat there. Or
there's probibly lots of little condo's for rent in Sun River.
