If I recall correctly, the owner of Sharktooth reported that the top 30
feet of his ski area was as good as anything in the Alps. So, that is something like 1.5 turns? And, with another 30 lifts, Sharktooth would have the same lift capacity as Vail - or at least Boyne Mountain. ( I always thought his claim was a little strange.) TCS (The Colorado Skier) Loveland opens in 2 months. |

The claim didn't hit me as much as the thought of a ski area near Greely. Now that is more than a little strange. Sam "48 days to Loveland" Seiber |

Those rats have a count down : clock running right now. I just hope it is accurate. Here's perhaps a little-known tidbit about Sharktooth: they opened one summer in the early 80's for some weeks of grass skiing. Can't remember now what the soda was called that featured a commercial showing gonzo grass skiing, making it look fun and easy - but that's what got us out there. Well, the grass was in short supply in the prairie near Greeley and between that and the fact that all those things do is carve (no sideslipping), it was quite challenging and we came away battered and bruised - never to try it again. I don't think Sharktooth lasted much longer... There was also grass skiing at Arapaho East for a while, but now there are trophy houses at the top of that hill. -Paul C. |

The claim didn't hit me as much as the thought of a ski
area near Greely. Now that is more than a little strange. Good observation. That would make Sharktooth the farthest east of any Colorado ski area. And the only one actually located in the prairie, rather than (at least) in the foothills. Oops! I just checked my map. SUGARITE, also known as RATON SKI BASIN, was actually farther east. But it was located in the foothills. [FWIW, Sugarite is usually listed as a New Mexico ski area - accessed from the town of Raton, NM - , but was actually located just north of the NM/CO border.] TCS (trivia are us) TCS (The Colorado Skier) Loveland opens in less than 2 months. |

FWIW Sharktooth closed in 1986.
Also, Sharktooth had the lowest base elevation of any Colorado ski area. And the man who said "30 feet of our hill is as good a anything in the Alps" was owner Dick Perchlik. Wonder if the quote did him any good. TCS (The Colorado Skier) Loveland opens in less than 2 months. |

I think its summit didn't even get close to the next lowest base. And the man who said "30 feet of our hill is as good a anything in the Alps" was owner Dick Perchlik. Wonder if the quote did him any good. Donno, but it was great for humor. Sam |
