Well, good for you.

I went to the Joe Louis Arena last night, sat in a skybox, and watched
the Red Wings win a Playoff game. What's this got to do with swords,
you say?

A hockey game is as close as you can get to seeing an actual sword
fight.

If you're a mighty warrior, you got to love hockey. It's the only
sport where every athlete carries a weapon.

And it starts off with a "face-off." When you're carrying a sword,
"face-off," can have several meanings.

In lacrosse every athlete carries a weapon and is allowed (even
expected, if he is playing good defense) to beat on the opponent with
it, as long as the opponent is carrying the ball.

But they don't have face-offs.

And I don't think they have skyboxes.

They do have face-offs:

But there is no need for skyboxes. Everyone sits right on the
sideline.

I live in the hotbed of Lacrosse. Yep they got faceoffs, yep they all
got sticks, no padding below the waist and in this day and age,
they've all gotten big - Some of those dudes are just flat big and
mean. Hopkins, Towson, Maryland, Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Navy. There
isn't a lot of money in it, they just do it cause they want to.

Southern Cslifornia is new lacrosse territory, but it is developing
rapidly. We have club and school programs from about age 6 into
college. My son played a year in 8th grade. After his first game, he
said "Dad, I need more pads."

My daughter is now in her 4th year of it (6th-9th grades). The girls
game resembles the original only in the ball and the size of the
goal. Everything else is different, more feminine. No checking
except of sticks holding the ball away from the body, no protective
gear except mouthpieces and eyeguards (except for the goalkeepers -
I'm trying to convince our keeper to wear hockey keeper shinpads).

But there are opportunities here - 4 of our graduating girls got
athletic scholarships in lacrosse, one at the U. of Richmond.
