Isn't this potential theft problem more easily solved by buying insurance?

First, I have insurance, so replacement isn't a problem. Second, it's
not about replacement, it's about a theft ruining a vacation. You're
not going to be able to replace a set of lost skis in a couple of
hours.

Funny thing about a Pinto. In the late 80's my younger brother was
given a Pinto that was "driven" by the proverbial grandmother who only
drove it to church on Sunday's and kept it in the garage otherwise. I
believe it was a 1975 Pinto and it still had the new car smell and
only 7,000 miles. The funny part was that, even this new, the car was
a piece of junk but it was funny to see a totally mint Pinto driving
around in 1988.

Driving a car only a short distance once a week is an excellent way to
kill it, even if it's not a Pinto.

I never thought of my Pinto as "a piece of junk". I thought it was really
neat. Of course I had a station wagon - which looks better than a coupe - and
it really was orange, with orange and black upholstery.
And I had "moved up" from a VW Squareback - which, admittedly, probably was a
piece of junk.
