Or take the busses that are running every six mins. and are free. Get up
five minutes earlier and have a beer apres' and the crowds on the bus
are very managable. Unless you are staying way out *I* think it is the
way to go.

That is the thing I meant. Most of the ski areas I am aware of
(primarily New England) have some sort of shuttle from the far away
parking areas, but also a shuttle that goes to the primary lodging
area in the nearest town.

To everyone's advantage, as the more people using a shuttle from town,
the less traffic and smog, the less parking problems, etc.

The ultimate was the classic ski trains in the late 40s and 50s, which
would leave Boston on Friday night, take skiers up to North Conway,
etc., where buses from each lodging place would pick people up and
bring them to where they were staying. In the morning there was (still
is) a town shuttle which takes people to some of the nearby ski areas.

Sunday River in Maine has been running a ski train to Bethel, with a
shuttle to the ski area, which all starts in Portland. One can easily
get to Portland vis bus, Amtrak, or by plane, so you could easily do a
carless ski weekend.

Other possiblities in northern NE, with a little research. I don't
know any details, but I suspect that you can do the same in many other
regions.
