Closest ski area to Colorado Springs?

Where is it? It could be any ski area - not just one of the larger areas
(http://www.coloradoski.com/resorts/index.cfm) - unless that is all there
is?

Just curious.

Thanks.

Closest ski area to Colorado Springs?

The ski area closest to COS is Loveland.

2nd would be Breckenridge.

When it is open (which is seldom), Cuchara Valley would be second.

If Loveland pass is open, doesn't A-Basin come in second?
And, from memory, if Berthond is open, isn't Winter Park closer than
Breckenridge?

C.

Here is a list, to the nearest 5 miles.

Mileage from Colorado Springs to nearby Ski Areas:

115 Breckenridge

120 Loveland

125 Winter Park

125 A-Basin

130 Copper Mtn

130 Keystone

130 Monarch

140 Ski Cooper

150 Vail

I believe that I previously indicated that Loveland was the closest. It is
closer in Time rather than Miles. All freeway all the way - and no mountain
passes to cross. However, Breckenridge is all two-lane road with one minor
and one major pass to cross.

My favorite was always Ski Broadmoor. About 5 miles.

Cheers, TCS

Ski Broadmoor? Is/was that a small ski area in CO? I'm interested in these
smaller areas - or what is left of them. Are there many? Another that you
mentioned was Cuchara Valley.

Thanks!

(Sorry for the delay - I was on vacation)

Lost ski areas is my hobby. How many would you like to hear about? In
Colorado there were over 100. How about Pikes Peak, Tenderfoot Hill, Holiday
Hills, Sharktooth, Arapahoe East, Squaw Pass, Berthoud (sadly), Geneva Basin,
Hidden Valley, Red Mountain, Ski Dallas, Mesa Lakes, Rimrock, Marble,
Stagecoach, etc., etc.,

All gone? Why? Big bad ski areas squeeze them out of business?

I'd love to see more night skiing in Co - especially club/Masters USSA
racing for older kids and after school training for real kids. I think
smaller areas would be ideal for that. How do skiing families with parents
and kids that race make it work out there? I mean, if I live in say Fort
Collins, that would be hard with the travel and (on the weekends) the
crowds.

Do you strike a deal with your employer to work at night so that you can
train and race during the daytime once or twice a week and then focus on the
kids programs during the weekend?

Thanks TCS.

Always love reading Colorado ski history.

If I recall correctly, the owner of Sharktooth reported that the top 30
feet of his ski area was as good as anything in the Alps.
So, that is something like 1.5 turns?

Anyway, glad someone else cares about the Loveland opening date.
They have re-done their web site. Those rats have a count down
clock running right now. I just hope it is accurate.

You can see most of the Lost Colorado Ski Area data at:

www.nyx.net/~mwallace/tcs

That site is in newsletter format, but if you work at you can find everything.
And maybe you will get a kick out of the rest of the material.

If you still have questions, I would be happy to update and expand on the
material.
