View Full Version : How's A-basin holding up?

I thought my season had already come to its tragic end, but some
friends are heading for A-basin for Memorial Day weekend, and have
suggested I come along......I haven't been tracking the reports from
there, but can anyone tell me how things are holding up?

At this rate, I don't hold much promise for the Basin. They have one
black run left, and it is barely black. A main green on the lower
mtn is gone, which leads me to think they have "harvested" its
snow for another run. They have lost 10" in a week, and are now
at about a 40" base. Sadly, the snow in the high country the last
36 hours hasn't brought much new to the scene. By the 30th, there
will be a few blues that will dump into Dercums Gulch. Last half of
Dercums will be about as wide as a 2 lane road, leading to the
Lenawee lift. If you are not at all picky about conditions (meaning
you just have to get any kind of turns in), it may be worth your
travel costs. I don't see the Basin making it much into June
this year. I will know more Sunday as I am going up then.

It's not holding up very well. Not really any snow sticking from this
storm. I'm going tomorrow probably. Pretty much all of the good stuff is
closed.

Just got back and it was pretty good on High Noon and the lower half. Upper
half was pretty icy and flat light. When we were leaving arount 3:30 it had
started snowing pretty heavy and it looks like it will last awhile. By the
time I got back to Breck, there was little to no snow here. If you come up
early tomorrow morning, there just might be a few inches of fresh up there.

As far as Memorial Day goes, it looks like this is the last snow of the
season and things will be pretty sloppy by next weekend. Probably be pretty
crowded too since none of the expert stuff on the Pali side is open. They
had the lower part of the East wall open today but there sure were a lot of
rocks sticking through. I think you would be better off planning on some
whitewater if you are up here for Memorial Day. The paper says this should
be peak runoff over the next week. Almost a month earlier than normal.

Snoig, Sam, thanks for the news (bad though it may be). Looks like
Lake Michigan for me....I'm not complaining, but a few more turns
woulda been nice.

Well, Independence Pass or Trail Ridge Road could be a good call for this
weekend.
