My thought is that Ghandi had it right - passive resistance is the
only path to true enlightenment. We should eliminate the military in

setting such an example we would become loved by all nations, and
world peace would become a reality.

Wait just a minute there - murdering dictators, starvation at the
hands of warlords, and living under the threat of terror I can deal
with. But you will only take my beer WHEN YOU CAN PRY IT FROM MY DEAD
COLD FINGERS!!!
Plus, it's Coors Extra Gold anyways. I figure that eliminates at
least 90% of the folks here at rec.skiing.beersnobs....

Right after I shoot all the conservatives, I plan on passing very strict
beer quality laws. Before you complain, let you know that this will not be
easy for me. One of my wife's best friends from undergrad is a Coors. He's
a d@mn nice guy but we've never seen eye to eye when it comes to beer.

Actually, calling for "shooting" the opposition sounds a lot more
like anarchy than Americanism. I've never heard the right (Rush
included) call for shooting the other side. YMMV

I certainly haven't. When she has appeared on Bill Mahre's show on
HBO, she stays cool and composed and the lefties talking *at* her appear
like raving lunatics and screaming at her. I know that she's
conservative but I have not read her nor do I care. I just find it
*very* interesting when left and right get in a panel discussion which
side usually ends up frothing at the mouth and screaming and appearing
non-sensical and emotional. (Hint: it ain't the rightist folks.) Don't
lefties actually see themselves and how they *appear* publicly. It's
downright embarrassing. BTW, I'm a registered Democrat in a Republican
state. Kinda harkens back to my rebellious child of the 60's roots.
Going against the majority and all that rot. ;-)

In looking back (via the 2003 World Almanac) since '52 Colorado has
majority voted for the Democrat candidate only once in '64 barely over
Goldwater. Every other presidential election Colorado votes Republican.

Watch Bill Mahre's show on HBO. There's no holds barred and the
lefties come of as raging idealogues most of the time. As I said I'm
fairly middle of the road, but lefties need to look in the mirror to see
how they come off publicly. It is embarassing. If you don't have HBO
then sorry. As for my opinions, they are just that my opinions and
impressions on round table discussions. I can't quantify my opinions
for you, sorry.

I found the programming on HBO to be excellent at times, and well
worth having. I loved the Sopranos and the Real Sex stuff - between
that and say 2 movies a month it'd more than pay for itself.

No because I usually don't pay attention *that* closely to the
talking head shows. I didn't watch Bill Mahre on free TV all that much
either. Mainly because one of his friends and frequent guests is Ariana
Huffington and the token conservative is usually set up as a target for
humorous purposes. And Ariana, good gawd what an annoying loudmouth who
won't let the other side complete a thought without butting in with her
oh so impressive intellect.

My impressions usually come from the politicians that appear on the
talking head shows. Most politicians, both sides, are dishonest,
evasive smarmy buttmunchers who mostly wouldn't answer a straight
question if their political office depended on it. And letting either
side complete a thought is simply not on the game plan. But *if* you
ever get HBO, watch Bill's show (or get a friend to tape it) and you'll
see what I mean. But since you brought up Ann Coulter and I've only
seen her on that show, I feel she comes off as cool, logical and
non-emotional as a counter-point to the lefties that he puts on.
Now I also recognise that ratings are important and controversy
sells and Bill *undoubtedly* stacks the panel with outspoken people.
Bill strikes me as a leftie yet his guest lefties appear like
overemotional simps. By design? Who knows. :-/

Both Nixon(R) and Bush(R) tried to subvert that sentiment.
IMO Bush actually succeeded. Even if you believe he didn't, just the
fact that half the country believes he did, is cause for alarm IMO. I
fear we are living in the decades historians in 3 or 4 centuries will
refer to as the Collapse of the American Republic.
But so what - Let's talk about something that's Actually Important! I'm
going to claim global warming will be good for the skiing - more
moisture in the air means more snow. As long as temperatures are below
freezing it doesn't matter if they're 31deg or 20deg, unless you're one
of those Collyradians or Youtards who can't ski good California Extreme
Powder. Even the presumed downside (the middle of the continent will
likely warm up to 33deg, instead of stopping at 31deg) is not really a
downside - it'll safe me the costs of my annual road trip.

Reading this kind of stuff is only entertaining for, um, maybe

I thought you were talking of the '60 election where Daley delivered
Chicago / Illinois / the election to the Kennedys. I just remember the
nightmare that was '68 and wish I could forget. One of the episodes of
"From The Earth to The Moon" is entitled "1968" and reflects on all that
happened that awful year.

Okay, so that's a sample size of one. Didn't see it, but I'll take
your word for it.
Gotta point out, folks, that an individual incident may make a
strong impression, but it doesn't make a trend. Furthermore --
which was really my point in this thread -- if you want to disavow
those whackos who are self-proclaimed members of your favorite
segment of the political spectrum, or what have you, you must allow
others the same. Saying, "You got whack jobs, we got none!" is not
gonna fly, no more than saying, "You got more whack jobs than we
do!" when you can't provide supporting evidence.

It wasn't a comment on the programming, but on my TV-watching
habits. I've heard all kinds of raves about the Sopranos, I just
don't have the kind of time to watch where I wouldn't feel like I
was wasting my money on a subscription service. As for movies,
well, that's what Netflix is for...much more convenient.
Now...if my satellite company carried Eurosport, I'd be there in a
heartbeat. Has anyone tried to get this carried by a US provider?

As I understand it, he did it _against_ Nixon (and for Kennedy), and
that battle actually was fought in the street. Okay, in the ditch,
which is where some of the ballot boxes were found. A much less
subtle tactic than purging valid voters from the rolls beforehand.

I can't tell whether, by "anti-lifers", you mean those who are in
favor of maintaining access to legal abortion, or you mean those who
set their gunsights on the former. I used to live around the corner
from where John Salvi went on his little spree; I used to have to
wade through crowds of red-faced, screaming, spit-spraying
anti-choice "protestors" that targeted Brookline (and, by the way,
how THAT all came about isn't something that they boast about in
conservative circles...but then, it's not a thing to boast about).
My point stands. If the right is allowed to disavow John Salvi and
his ilk, the left may do the same with "their" whack-jobs. No
exemptions allowed.

But you keep doing it...every time...so once more with feeling, what
exactly makes the accusations "transparent and lame"? For that
matter, exactly what set of accusations are you talking about?
There were many, ranging from some pretty wacky conspiracy theories
to more low-key accusations of fraud to the belief that the results
were invalid and shouldn't have stood. Which of those do you call
"transparent and lame"?

Actually, that should be: "doesn't want me to drive my SUV because it
uses too much gas, but lives in a $1,000,000 Berkeley shack."
But you guys who live in the nether regions can't imagine what
$1,000,000 buys you around here - 2 BR, 1 Ba, carport, barred windows.
And then it burns down, shortly after the latest burglery.

<chuckle> so anybody who is concerned that the Presdet misled us to
war is just a sore loser? You might recall that those that "didn't
get their way" are a larger slice of the American public than those
that did, and they've given the Presdet a much fairer shake than his

We're talking lift-served, aren't we? Ok - limiting the discusion to
lift served, then:
The Hole's season is too short. Dam Elk refuge ...
Decent enough skiing when the place is open, but closing in April?
Wassup with that?
Squaw's got season, steep, and plenty of snow - but you gotta wear elbow
pads to get a shot at the steep on a pow morning, and all the cage doors
are broke so the whole zoo's loose on the grounds.
Mammoth has exposured steeps, cliffs, backcountry, a season that won't
quit, and enough jewelry wearing LA wannabies to fill a flophouse; which
reminds me - Mammoth's flophouses (Ullr and Kitzbuel) have both closed,
so the privaledge of cheapest living at Mammoth falls to the Motel 6 -
not so great; but a ski vise will still clamp to their railings for
evening tuneups and race waxing.
Alta is nice - good snow, good terrain, and fine hiking - but the lineup
to hike anywhere is like an LA freeway onramp, and the local folks'
attitude sucks.
Whistler has the scourge of r.s.a as a regular - reason enough to stay away.
That's the big 5 of North American Lift-Served Skiing - all the rest are
wannabies. And now for my vote:
Either that little un-named place accross the ridge from Squaw - same
terrain, snow, long season, with added hike-to terrain; but no Squaw people.
Or that little un-named place accross the canyon from Alta - same
terrain, snow, long season, with added hike-to terrain; but no Alta people.
One will note that neither are "Destination Resorts."

Thanks, I'd gone off to read the morning papers before responding.
But in the meantime I have an example from long ago.
Back in the late '70s we had a highly imflammatory (to some) radio
talk show host, Alan Berg. He loved when shows got heated because it
was good for ratings. He always said his favorite topic was toilet
paper because there's no middle ground. You either hang it over or
under and the calls were rabid about people's preferences.
Anyway, before the Aryan Nations folks had him assassinated, he
happened to have David Duke, the Klan's Grand Gizard on the show. I
somehow managed to get in and had my few mintues on the air questioning
Mr. Duke. During the time I was talking with him, my voice pitch rose,
my adrenaline was pumping, I was trying to maintain my temper but was
slowly losing it. The whole time Duke was calm, reasoned and respectful
and appeared to be the better.
Well, when I hung up I had time to reflect on what had just
happened. I appeared to be the over-emotional, foaming at the mouth
idiot while he was the voice of reason. Now I detest everything the
Klan stands for, but I had to admit he was smooth and professional and
his act played very well. The guy was good, very good. My hands were
shaking after that call and I realized I had been played by a pro.
My point in this is the righties are very good at remaining calm
while the lefties (probably in frustration at making no headway) get
progressively more and more emotional, weakening their case. Okay,
maybe not their case, but their presentation of that case. That's the
point I'm making, the lefties don't step back and view dispassionately
how their presentation weakens their appearance and thus their cause.
They probably don't hire the image consultants the righties do and it
shows. ;-)

And in your example, I wonder what her 10,000 sf house cost. But it
wasn't the cost I was pointing out. It was the extra energy it takes to

Yes, I do. Some areas I'm quite liberal in my opinions. In areas
of economy and fiscal matters, I'm somewhat conservative. With regards
to government matters I have a somewhat libertarian bent to my
viewpoints. With regard to science and technology, I say full steam
ahead. All of this, taken on average, tends to place me more in the
middle than "true" lefties or righties. I watch both versions of

I am very much for the maintenance and improvement of the
environment. For now, it's our only planet. I've had a vasectomy after
siring one child. Have you done as much for the future? I detest the
enviro-whackos who claim the world is dying and the air is choking us
and the water is poison. They're stupid and over-emotional ranters who
won't let facts interfere with their viewpoints. I remember when the
air in Denver in the late 60s and early 70s was opaque and near black
during the worst inversions. Things are improving and getting better.
I believe, in this country, we having been making great progress and
will continue to improve our lot vis a vis the environment
But I am seriously angry at those assholes (US Forest Service
employees) who planted lynx hair in an area where lynx had not been to
skew the results of the study to back their agenda. Science and the
scientific process has no place for emotions and agendas, ever! In fact
they did more harm to their cause from getting caught than they ever
could have thought possible. They damaged legitimate enviros by
tainting the whole movement by dishonestly trying to fake data. :-(

Yeahbut, if I don't know the candidates at all I feel my vote is
wrong. And since I don't own but rent, I do not have a vested stake in

And, in this area parents of students are *highly* involved with the

If I recall correctly, Scott made a big point of stating that he was
suffering from a case of Type II Diabetes Mellitus. If this is true, the
disease results from some sort of bodily abuse - obesity is the most common
problem but alcohol/substance abuse is a key contributor as well. This
version of diabetes is generally controlled by diet. The upshot of all of
this is that our little buddy has definitely inflicted some permanent damage
upon himself.

Mike Barnicle, a former columnist for the Boston Globe, used to
write these pathetically one-note right-wing rants in which he
wrapped himself in a blue collar and tore into them damn liberal
elitists who just make it tough for the working man. Two things
made this the most ironic situation in modern journalism: one, that
he wrote these deathless pieces of prose from the comfort of a
luxury home in Lincoln, and two, that after years of writing
variants of the same three columns, it turned out that he wasn't
even writing those, and he got sacked for plagiarism.

And the answer is . . . . (drumroll) . . . . . .
If you're a liberal, the conservatives are more rabid, and vice versa.
Both sides have their share of idealogues.
Personally, I liked Jon Stewart's comment in his interview last week on
Bill Moyers "Now" or whatever it's called. Stewart said that the
political debate has been highjacked by the 5% of idealogues on both
sides. I agree.

Well...I guess that further splits down the "best" into "best for
who". If you're going with a gang of people of varying abilities, I
agree. Or, if you want to have your "best" mean "best for the
widest range of people", likewise.

Mostly agreed, although I don't mind it being a little hassle
getting to the good stuff -- like, you gotta ride this chair and go
down this trail and then ride THIS chair and cut over on THIS
catwalk etc. You get fewer people that way.

Agreed. I like low-amenities ski areas, because I don't like the
feeling that I'm paying for non-functional glitz or services I am
not going to use.
> I hope I didn't forget anything here but people can add any missing

Transportation is important. I don't mind it being some work to get
to the area, but I don't like a huge amount of hassle getting from
my car (or my lodgings) to the slopes. Places like Stratton are a
nightmare for this reason.

I think more voters in Florida *intended* to vote for Gore than intended
to vote for Bush. Unfortunately, confusing ballets (the infamous
"butterfly"), screwed-up machines (they have been banned in MA), and
their own unfamilarity with voting procedures (many were first-time
voters) got in their way, and so a small margin for Gore got converted
into an even smaller margin for Bush. All very sad, and an utter
disgrace all around.
And all very irrelevant. You're right, it is done. GWB has a lot more
to worry about now then the election of 2000. I've got a sickening
feeling that the wheels are going to start coming off very soon.

JH is truly great, but...the best can vary. When we do a road trip from
Fort Collins, we generally pick from Salt Lake, Jackson, and Taos,
trying to make a judgement on where the snow's going to fall. Since CA
is too far away, it doesn't enter into the equation. In my opinion, JH
has the best mountain, but not always the best snow. But then again, I
do enjoy the famous Jackson crud on the lower faces. Taos has suffered
in prior years due to a decided lack of snow (but this past Feb and
later was pretty awesome). JH is usually the default; something good
has to be going on in SLC to pull us away. The lift-served OB at JH is
just incredible, plus it's relatively easy to hike to.
However, one year, we made a big mistake - puttering around 2 days in
breakable crust in the bright sunshine at JH, waiting for snow, then
finally going to Alta to find amazing snow 3 days *after* the storm - 2
days of crusty skiing "wasted". The storm had swung south of the
Tetons.
Clearly, if you have to have a fixed destination and you want the
highest probability of good snow on a challenging mtn, then LCC
or Solitude is your best bet. I kinda prefer Alta to Snowbird
because of the crowd factor.
Whistler/BC is even more expansive than JH, but frankly, the snow
is just as likely to suck as to be good. I've had fun skiin'/good
snow in Tahoe: Kirkwood, Squaw, Alpine Meadows, but not much
experience there, really. Taos is truly a cool mountain when
there's snow, reminds me of Alta, but with even more
steepness possibilities and great hike-to stashes, but likely
not as good snow. Better green chile.

I refuse to try to judge presentations. I think each party
is talking to a vastly different audience.
Having a grandmother who watches FOX news 12 hours out of
the day, I believe that rightists are preaching to the
converted, the unthinking, the choir, the sheep so to say.
When in her presence I've watched my grandmother change the
channel every single time any information comes on the
screen suggesting Republicans are anything but perfect. I
don't believe she is alone. Its why boring guys like
Limbaugh are able to exist.
Its easy to preach to sheep. They just keep grazing.
The leftists are trying to preach to a whole different
crowd. You have the centrist like myself, who simply don't
like much of their message, question most everything they
say, etc, but still send votes their way when a better
choice doesn't exist. You have the poor, who vote for
democrats, but are ****ed cause the government pays them not
enough, makes them work, etc (the dependent whiners). On
and on.
You can't preach to the unconverted, and the democrats don't
have a giant tool of conversion in the form of the radical
right wing church groups that form the core of the
Republican message, and brainwashed audience.
So its harder for democrats imo.
The people with the strongest message come from the center.
They have the truth behind them, not religion, or handouts.

It's even harder for me in that I believe in the results that the
Republicans are after AND I believe that "churches" are probably the
single biggest ripoff and are responsible for WAY more misery than
anything else in the history of man.
I think that the Republicans have more of "the truth" going for them,
they just cloud it up with that religion bull****.

results from poisoning your liver with too much alcohol and drugs. Ask David

I was going to point out that there may a maintenance type of drug (some
version(probably) of alcohol hydrogenase that metabolizes alcohol). I have
a similar situation with gout - I have it but taking an enzyme like
allopurinol prevents symptoms from arising. However, cirrhosis of the liver
is a NON-reversible disease.

But Mr. Crosby got a new liver. Gee, I wonder if it had anything to do
with him being famous? If I were in charge of handing out livers for
transplant, which are scarce, I'd disqualify anyone who had trashed his
own through self-abuse. Who's to say he won't trash the new one too?

I'm sorry about that; I was truly unaware that you were Californine,
or Californais, or whatever it is. But your slogan needs serious
punching-up. Like maybe "Richard Henry: Gravity is on his side!"

Yeah, why not? They are both pathological liars, without a shred of ethics
or morals, utterly devoid of any decency, honesty, or spirituality.
Perfectly qualified to be politicians.

I think we should enter The Tominator for Lt. Gov. The slogan would be
perfect.

Nice enough that this psychpathic liar finally found it in her heart to stop
lying about me. Problem is she has never retracted her lies, never admitted
to smearing me and defaming me, never confessed to her participation in an
ongoing campaign of criminal terrorism.
Bev Ashley doesn't want people talking about what she and her sick friends
did on this newsgroup-because it makes Bev Ashley look like a truly vile
****.
Hey, Bev?

Your friend Henry certainly has no balls, Ashley. None of your fellow

Doing that would take balls. Cowards like Bev Ashley and her buddies would

Holy smokes, I've been away for almost a year and this perplexed
imbecile is still arguing, accusing and cussing at the whole world. My god
man, get a grip. Moral and ethical people do not engage in such trifle.
Let it alone and get on with your ethical standards that you so persistently
and loudly announce while at the same time calling the unethical types such
names as assholes and ****s. I have never heard of, or seen a man become so
distraught that he freely used the word **** and called himself moral and
ethical in the same sentence. This is Usenet, and you've managed to attract
every nameless pugnacious pugilist who cares to respond and pitifully poke
at your all encompassing tirades. If you are not resolving conflicts face
to face with your asinine nemeses, then you are simply proving a severe
indignation that resists all plausible reasoning and degenerates any
rational man into a mumbling fumbling fool who is no better off than the
asinine ones that he so adamantly despises.

There's no conflict between Scott and his fan club, they all need the
same thing: to keep on like this forever. They're blinkered because
they want to be: it's a distraction from the reality of their social
lives, or lack of them.
They can fantasise that if they could force their opponents to stop
posting, then somehow everything would be better for them. And since it
won't happen, this won't be put to a test it'd surely fail.
I don't agree the Argument attracts people from all over Usenet, it
isn't interesting enough for that. Now and then someone from outside
comes and chips in, but they soon get bored and go away again. Though
it's true that if Scott walked out the others'd have to find another
Argument elsewhere, rather than accept that nothing else has changed for
them.
So: why not killfile them and post about something cold and preferably
fluffy? At this time of year, fantasy frost is OK, in fact many of us
are grateful even for that!
