View Full Version : Ski Resorts Where Lifts Go Directly to Hotel
W
December 9th 08, 09:19 PM
I am looking for (affordable) ski resorts in the Western US or Canada that
meet these criteria:
- The resort's ski lifts go directly to the hotel or condos (or within 100
yards)
- There are shops and restaurants within walking distance of lodging. A
place where non-skiiers could have something to do would be great.
- A group of 10 could get by on around $200/day (so no $700/night rooms
unless its a suite with lots of separate rooms).
Basically we are trying to avoid the hassle of needing to rent and drive
cars....
What locations / resorts come close to these requirements for a February
trip?

Just to clarify this, I meant a group of 10 could get by on $200/day *per
person*.

That describes a lot of ski resorts. The one I am most familiar with
is Squaw Mountain near Lake Tahoe in Calif. You do have to drive
there, unless you want to take a longish shuttle ride from Sacramento
or Reno airport to the resort.

Maybe Heavenly at South Lake Tahoe? Not my cup of beer, but maybe it's
your. Free shuttle from Reno airport to Casinos; cheap rooms in the
Casinos; lots to do for non-skiers; lift right to Casinos; big mountain.
Most of the other places with slope-side lodging and non-skier
entertainment are phony, more akin to carnivals than real living towns
- Vail and Park City (and most of the Colorado and Utah places) are
quintessential examples.

Which Casinos at South Lake Tahoe are directly connected to the lifts?

So I would recommend Breckenridge as a point of departure. I'd scout the
internet for rates and also Hotwire and Priceline. These folks at Blue
River Sports can give you a hand by calling their 800 number for any
question you may have. Ask for "Sody" or "Dave."

Blue Mountain near Collingwood Ont. and Holiday Valley in Ellicottville
NY both have facilities within a short walk of the hills.

Big White might suit you very well. The hotels are right on the hill.
You can ski down to the lifts in the morning, and there are various
chalets you could rent for the entire group. Restaurants and shops are
also all right there; they have to be. Big White is located about 45
minutes from Kelowna and there really isn't anything but what is right
at the area.
And that might be the one thing you won't like: I don't know how much
there is to do if you're not skiing or boarding.

"Bud's Bait and Campground" is just a stones throw from the base of
the Skaneateles Ski Hill. I think you might could get 10 into one of
those cabins for not too much more than $200 for the week.

In California, Heavenly would be the best for what you're looking for.
The lift goes right down into the main part of town. You have a big
choice of hotels and motels at widely varying prices. The lift tickets
are pretty high though.

You can fly into South Lake Tahoe, though I suspect that flying to Reno
and taking a shuttle or renting two cars would be much cheaper. Plus you
could go to other ski areas besides Heavenly if you wanted.

Actually that is Squaw Valley. $200/ person may do it, but would be close.
Kirkwood you could rent a condo or two. Heavenly Valley at South Shore
Tahoe. reasonable motels in the area, and if you get lucky at the casinos
you could make money. :>) A package to Whistler in Canada, or Steam Boat
Springs in Colorado both meet the criteria.

My vote and recommendation would be Telluride Colorado. But I would
also agree with the Breckenridge idea.

Panorama, BC,

Nice cozy hideout, and cheap too, nevertheless, it was more ten years
ago, can't recall the detail.
I had a Taichi Skiing seminar there, and one of students, being too
tired on a day of hard skiing, lost control at the door and crashed
into the living room with skis still attached.

As was mentioned before, in South Lake Tahoe you have MontBleu Casino,
Horizon Casino, Harrrah's Casino and Harvey's Casino. All of these
casinos sit at the base of Heavenly. You can fly into Reno and there
is a shuttle that will take you to these Casinos. Last season the
shuttle cost around $30 round trip and leaves almost every two hours
from the casinos. They all sit right together at the base of
Heavenly. All of the casinos offer a ski package with the rooms. The
best to stay at there is either Harrah's or Harvey's. MontBleu is not
bad but does entertain to the younger crowd (if your into that) and I
mean the atmosphere the clubs, the bars, etc. Once your in the area,
really no need for a car, all entertainment is right there and the
lift to heavenly is easily within walking distance. Harvey's and
Harrah's both also offer great dining experience from quick and go to
fine dining and also have some great entertainment at night at either
Sammy Hagar's Cabo Cantina or the Hard Rock Cafe. There is also an
Improv Comedy Room inside of Harrah's.
As far as the skiing, it is really good. You can either ski the
California side or the Nevada side of the mountain. The Nevada side
is really good. And the view over Lake Tahoe is incredible.

Pretty much all of the major Colorado resorts meet those criteria.
Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper, Vail, Beaver Creek, Steamboat, Aspen,
Telluride.
They also have free transportation so cars ar not needed.

That's true. Also REI sells a bunch of discount tickets at their stores.
Personally if I were the original poster I'd fly to Reno and rent two
cars. Shuttles for ten people will be about the cost of two week-long
rentals from Reno. This would enable the skiers to try different
resorts, including Sierra Ski Ranch, Kirkwood, Homewood, and Mount Rose,
and would allow the non-skiers to do more sight-seeing. Pick up discount
lift tickets in Reno at Costo and REI (across the street from each other).
There's also the option of renting a condo or house in South Shore which
might be cheaper than a bunch of hotel rooms. There's a glut of condos
on the Nevada side of Heavenly with amazingly low prices. They have
shuttles to south shore, as well as to the Nevada side of Heavenly.
BTW, some of the other resorts in the area have shuttles from south
shore, including Sierra Ski Ranch (free) and Kirkwood ($5).

It's only a detail but I have a clarification for myself. I was at
Tahoe last summer and saw that there was indeed a gondola that ran
down into an area in the midst of the casinos. It was not there when I
lived in N. Tahoe in the '70's and I don't think it was there when I
skied Heavenly in the 90's. And I think that I did notice a ski rental
shop and there was tourist services at the bottom of the gondola. But
is that considered the "base" now? Or is the "base" still up there at
the bottom of Gunbarrel and over on that road down into Nevada? Not
that it matters that much but I'm just not used to every bottom of
every lift being a base?
All that, and you are right. Using the casino for "home base" would be
FUN.

That's what I did. But get a condo on the East Shore, not the South
Shore. Watching the sunset over the lake is spectacular. It's God's

There's no "best" in the realm of Taichi Skiing, which only concerns
if the techniques are "functional."

Yeah, the town gondola is fairly new and purpose built just for those
folks who see walking access to the mountain as a selling point. The
base(s) are still as they were.

week rentals of cars. cars give you a chance to sightsee and ski
Kirkwood. the casinos used to have free parking for guests ...

The good thing about south shore is that the gondola comes down to a
real town, not just a ski resort village with hugely overpriced stores,
restaurants, and hotels, like Northstar on the northern end of Lake
Tahoe (where skiing is now a secondary business to real estate).
Even without a car, you can take the bus around South Shore pretty cheaply.

Try Northstar. They have some stay=and=ski=free deals in non-peak
times. You can also rent a house there and have just a short/free bus
ride to the village.

This is true, but the original poster's intent was not to have a low
cost trip, it was a) to not have to rent cars (for reasons other than
cost), b) avoid driving to the ski resort each day, and c) allowing
non-skiers to go places without driving. Of course this is going to cost
more than renting cars.
For inexpensive ski trips we stay in Reno and drive to the ski resorts.
Mount Rose is just up the road, about a 25 minute drive, and is fine for
our level of skiing (and it's very high so it has some of the earliest
season snow). There is good cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow
play areas nearby (all free). For those that want more challenging runs
Squaw and Alpine Meadows are about 35 minutes and 40 minutes away.
We like staying in Reno for several reasons. First, the hotels are very
inexpensive. Last week we stayed four nights at the Grand Sierra (used
to be the Hilton) and it was $91 including tax. Not $91 per night, but
$91 for four nights. The room was large and pretty nice, with two flat
screen TVs (one in the bathroom!), a refrigerator and a microwave. For
the kids, in the evening, they have a 50 lane bowling alley, an arcade,
and a movie theater showing first-run movies for $3. Second, there are
lots of good restaurants in Reno that are pretty cheap, including a rare
find--a good Chinese buffet (one that serves actual Chinese-Chinese
food). Third, if we need to buy stuff there are a lot of places to go,
including an REI, a Costco, and all the usual big box stores--you're not
forced into the ridiculous ski resort type shops like at Northstar.
Fourth, the drive there is on I-80, which is usually pretty fast and
well-plowed (unlike going to South Lake Tahoe or North Lake Tahoe where
there are stretches of congested two lane roads).

If you stay in the village and bus/limo from the Vancouver airport.

Agree, Reno is great, the Southwest Tahoe Express takes people from the
airport to the resorts. Then you walk from your hotel to the gondola.
On the east coast, Smugglers Notch is nice if you rent a bedroom home at
the bottom of the mountain. We literally walked out of our room to the
lift.
There are also shuttles to the Vail and Breckenridge area from Denver.
If you book a room at the bottom of the lift, you won't have to drive,
but the room will be expensive compared to a hotel off property.

The South Tahoe Express is $46 per person round trip, so for ten people
that's $460. You could rent two cars for a lot less than $460, if the
intent were to achieve the lowest cost.

Whistler, BC where major lifts go right into 3 village centres. Lots of
shops and restaurants. Resort is currently offering attractive packages
at all prices. Lots of 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom suites with full kitchens
and laundry. Direct bus available from Vancouver airport, or take a
limo if you have 5 - 6 people in your group.

To me, ski-in ski-out resorts are over rated. I stayed at one, and
the snow guns ran all night. To noisy. Mighty warriors need their
sleep to do battle at dawn.
