Been away from the NG for a while. Seems like things have calmed down
around here. None of the village idiots have posted for months it looks
like.
Anyway I'm getting a few free airline tickets to anywhere in the
continental US courtesy of Polident. :) No I don't use it but I didn't
have to buy that much of it to get the tickets. Anyway, I'm gonna use
them for a ski trip somewhere. Question is where. They need to be used
by the end of 2006. Where would you good folks suggest?

Ok. Airline tickets are free. How much do you want to spend on
lodging, ground transportation, etc? How much time do you have, i.e.
are you willing to waste a day or more at each end travelling?
If you're trying to keep the sundry expenses down and want to maximize
your time on the slopes, SLC is the obvious choice. Inexpensive lodging
in town, and the slopes are less than an hour's drive from the airport.
Delta flies non-stop PHL -> SLC, meaning you can do a four day weekend
and get 3 1/2 days of skiing in.
If you have more money & time to burn, other options present themselves.
But, before you get wedded to some particular location, check the fine
print of your free tickets and see where you can really fly for free -
that may impact your choices.

Problem is that "before end of 2006" BS. Means you need to go where
there's snow, but you can't really count 100% on there being snow
anywhere particular; and I bet they airline will make you set up
reservations way ahead in order to get your "free flight."
Look to the obvious early snow places and go as late as possible; avoid
the maritime resorts - they're a crapshoot: big snows or none.
Think California, Utah, Jackson for early snow.
Look to the costs. Looking for free tickets means you're a normal
everyday ski cheap skier, like me.
Think Utah, Jackson.
Aha! I note some overlap!
FWIW, Utah is cheap because you can stay in dirt cheap digs at the base
of the Cottonwood Canyons; avoid at all costs resort packages IN the
canyons or around on the bad skiing side AKA Park City (- use the saving
to buy several pairs of new skis.)
FWIW, Jackson is cheap because the place is overbuilt in cheap rooms to
support the family-Yellowstone summer trade - rooms are about given away
to winter visitors; again avoid packages - in contrast to what one would
believe, the existence of $29 rooms next door doesn't mean a packager
won't charge you $229 a night for neighboring accommodation.
I've repeatedly done both areas dirt-cheap, arriving without
reservations of any kind.
Good luck.

California will always be the place with the most early snow. Period.

Actually, tonight I drove from San Diego to Irvine and there was no
traffic delay anywhere - on a Friday night in summer! Maybe the gas
prices have really sunk in. (Apt symbol - I stopped at a gas staqtion
up here ($3.23/gal instaed of $3.39 near home) and there was a
stre-e-e-etch Hummer limo just sitting on the lot unoccupied.
This is the prototype California motel - freeways east and west,
In-N-Out Burger south, Carl's Jr north.

Like anyone would want to ski California anyways. Heavy wet snow and a
bunch of posers from San Francisco bragging about how much money they
don't care about losing at the craps table. The only reason I'd ever
go there would be to steal some new skis and cuckold a dot-com
millionaire or two. It's laughable, really.

Try out Big Mountain, Montana, it is a great mountain especially for anyone
from the PA area as I am. Another good place to go is Oregon rent a car,
you can ski Mt. Hood - Timberline, Meadows and if open Ski Bowl (has similar
runs that you would see in Vermont and New Hampshire).
You can go south 4 hours to Mt Bachelor another great mountain. You can
also go to Utah, Salt Lake and within an hour to hour and half there is a
host of great mountains.
Another question is what level of skier are you, where have skied and what
do you like to ski?

Hi Chuck,
If you are skiing the blue trails in the Pocono's and venturing on the
blacks just about any resort in the west would do. I would not recommend
the high price ones as you will not get to ski most of the mountain. PA
blues would be easy greens and most black trails would be green and blue
trails out west. I would still highly recommend Big Mountain, Montana as it
has a lot that you could ski and enjoy. The most beautiful site that I have
ever seen was at the summit of Big Mountain over looking the Glacier
National Park. My first time up there 10 years ago my friend took me up to
the summit lodge and asked me to look out the windows. The site was so
impressive that I thought it was a panoramic picture super imposed on the
wall, I had to go outside the lodge and see for myself. Now for the bummer
getting a clear day that I had then is a hit or miss, they get a lot of fog
up there. The back side of the mountain has plenty of nice trails that you
would enjoy. The only hard part is coming off the summit to get to the
trails is a little tough at first, it is a little steep and would be a tough
black trail here in the PA area but is only a green there since it is the
easiest way down to the other trails, just make a lot of big turns and stop
if you need to. The back side runs are similar to what you would find in
Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The front side runs are much longer from
the summit and sustains the pitch for most of the runs so you can get up a
lot of speed if not careful. If you stay at the lower lifts these runs are
shorter. If they get a lot of snow the skiing will be completely different
than back here on the east. The snow can be 12" to 24" deep and not hard
packed, if that is the type of snow they are having when you get there I
would recommend taking a lesson on how to ski it.
To prepare yourself for the west I would say go ski Vermont, NH a few times
first so you get used to the steepness and larger mountains. This way the
west won't be so over whelming and more enjoyable, plus you will be able to
ski more of the mountain and get your moneys worth.
