View Full Version : Usenet question

On this business of reading usenet headers, I have a question
and need a bit of help.
If a header were to say something like,
yaya!yayaya!delta.newsreader.com!nulluser.com!news .
And maybe, that same thing kept ocurring in other posts,
but in stead it would be, FI, disturbed.newsreader.com,
or, actuallydangerous.newsreader.com, something like that,
*then* it said, nulluser.com, what would this mean?
See, that part before newsreader dot com keeps changing.
But that newsreader and the nulluser thing stays there. What
would this mean?
Thank you very much in advance.

The path is concatenated from right to left. i.e. as the post travels
from one server to another each succesive server appends its name on
the left side of the path string as it handles the post. For instance
a typical path might be:
waltsnewserver.com!intermediatenewsserver2!interme diatenewsserver1!footsnewsserver
and that would indicate that the post originated at footsnewsserver,
passed though two intermediates, and eventually made its way to
waltsnewsserver where I read it. (No mater where you are, your own
newsserver should appear first or leftmost in the path.)
Now, the problem is that at each step of the way the server doesn't
know if the previous servers are legit or not. This allows malicious
posters to forge headers. For instance, if I have the ability to
inject a post at foo.com, I can spoof, say, microsoft by injecting a
post with a path like
bar.com!microsoft.com
and you'll see a path something like
footsnewsserver!intermediatenewsserver2!intermedia tenewsserver1!foo.com!bar.com!microsoft.com
The post didn't originate at microsoft, it originated at foo.com -
everything to the right of that was spoofed.
IOW, the nulluser.com part is probably spoofed. newsreader.com is
probably the source.
And now I'm out of my depth. Good luck. May the alt.2600 folks have
mercy on your soul.

I think it means the news-client is buggy and sure enough:
Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180
Switch to Gravity or something.

Ah, I got it now. So I guess we can expect that COTSE
sure won't tolerate some pebrained . emotionally disturbed
. psychopathic . in real life stalking . champion of third grade
bathroom humor spoofing their domain.
I mean, why would they want to give people an impression
like that?

He thought they might appreciate it, i guess.
Why are you x-psoting all this stuff to alt.2600, incidentally? Not stirring
things up I hope!
Oh yeah. alt.2600 snipped. as usual.

I suspect asking that here will, at best, only get you run around in
circles. Find a news group dedicated to that sort of thing and try some of
the methods they talk about. About 90% of it will be lies, some of it may
work. It might even require a little knowledge of C++ or the like, I really
dunno.

Or nntp and telnet. All you have to do is look for it, apparently.
It looks as though finding the server to use would be the real
problem. Meet Chinese bubba. And the server probably
wouldn't last long. Then again, it could be all lies.

Maybe because it's a skiing group? Why did you add it?
You are a troll - a very good, long invested effort, but a troll none
the less. A shame, too - you did talk about skiing and did actually have
some knowledge - a little trouble describing what the hell you were
talking about, but ski knowledge anyway. It was appreciated.
A good troll, well done.
But now - no cool, no quality, A Bad Troll, poorly done.
I suggest you regroup, get organized, re-establish your ski talk, and
sneak up on us again. That original troll was cool.

He certainly spent some time on it. I guess it was a work in progress. The
long period of pedantic, long-winded posts (lond windedness often shows a
lack of understanding of the subject). He suddenly changed recently, and
seemed to adopt the persona of a certain person. Totally different from the
previous one. And now he's jousting comfortably with the alt.2600 crew.

The points have been deleted. Been that way since the
seventies or so. I guess there were reasons behind it,
but they've fallen into confusion. Now they're a dull, flat
sort of thing, like one's affect when on the meds.
I think it was really done to protect ski instructors in
general and husbands who try to teach wives to ski.
Let's see, you're in the midwest or something, aren't
you? (I'm not stalking, I'm curious in re skiing opptys).
BTW, don't put on the snowboard or the short skis with
the wire bindings. Stick to real skis. They're 133t.

There is nothing known anywhere in the world that will protect husbands who
try to teach their wives to ski. That's why they invented ski instructors.

which is basically headquartered in the group alt.2600.
LAL, *I* was the one attacked. Apparently you don't

There are no usenet headquarters, especially for alt.* newsgroups. It might
be true that some/many/most/all of the regular alt.2600 posters use cotse, but
that's completely different.

Just to make sure we're all talking about the same thing here...
Somebody has contacted and harassed you in snail mail, email or flesh and
blood rather than in a usenet posting, correct? If so, can you explain what
was done to you?

Nah. The creation of RSAM was the best troll ever - outstanding
because it worked on so many levels.
Footer's troll is sort of like spending eighteen months of full-time
planning to phone a drugstrore and ask if they have Prince Albert in a
can. The effort-to-payoff ratio is *way* out of balance.

Wow. That is SUCH a great description.

Well, he had me going too, in the sense that I thought he took himself
seriously. It's still not clear, though, that the stuffy, officious,
hungry-for-authority, credentialist droning bore is an act.

Of course not.... despite his near constant references to it (i.e.
trolling it through the group) it is "a matter between him and {the
unnamed} harrasser(s)." Silly really. Wish it would go away.
Then again, as the silly season draws nigh, I shall be the one to soon
go away.

I stopped reading him months ago (except for his recent attempt at lunacy).
I guess I missed it all.

YES! No question. But more for the students.
But, true, even an old fossil instructor can meet some and
hook up.
Mostly, because it's about the almost most fun thing any
person could do. And it's neat to share it, giving to others
the fabulous gift of being able to do it. Do you know the
fastest I went on skis last year? 62 mph/90 plus km. In
perfect safety.
> Define "midwest"
Well, anything two states removed from the Atlantic ocean I
would say. But, specifically, a three state area might suffice.
I do realize you hackers have to be careful about revealing of
a specific location.
How close to Detroit, for instance, within say two hundred miles?
Four hundred? Two thousand?
