Just received the new issue (18 Apr 2005) of The New Yorker in the
mail today - there's a long article about our old bud butt dawg by
Nick Paumgarten called "Dangerous Game - The hazardous allure of
backcountry skiing."

Unfortunately, not avaialble on-line. Off to the sofa to read it -
night all.

I picked up the latest _Outside_ to read on a plane last week. There's
a few pages about BD and his sewing fixation, which was pretty kewl.

Who's the author of the article, Walt? I recall a pretty damn good
article in the New Yorker a couple of years ago about Bode Miller;
somebody writing for them knows skiing, and I wonder if it's the same
somebody

It's Nick Paumgarten. It's a story of the intersection of his own
family's various ski-tragedies and his visit with McClean (why BD?).
I'll give you the first graf:

In the ski-bum brain, the chance to ski with a magus like Andrew
McClean is the equivalent of an invitation for a night on the town with
Don Juan. The allure is great, but there's always the possibility that
the excursion will not end well.

The Milller-Maier story from last year was great. I don't remember who
wrote it but I suspect it was Paumgarten.

Not sure if he's the same somebody, but Nick obviously knows a thing or
two - otherwise I doubt he could have kept up with bd on the backcountry
treks they did for the article.

BTW, there's a brief mention of klaus and his trip to bd's wedding at
Alta with his tux rolled up in his pack. He's not mentioned by name,
but we all know who he is.

Such drama. Skiing with Andrew is safer than skiing with just about
anybody I can think of.

Off to the Lasals..Skking in the desert.. It's gonna be a hot
one. Talk you you guys Tuesday or soooo. Try to have some fun. Maybe
ski or something.

I knew about Extreme Ironing <www.extremeironing.com>, but I hadn't
heard of Extreme Sewing before.

Why am I unsurprised that there is such a thing?

Sewing fixation? Odd coincidence that - the wife is amused.

Remember that really interesting snow we skied? Well, now it's corned up
and is really nice spring skiing - rush back...
